For those who do not have hardwood floors or non-toxic natural fiber carpets, Safecoat has developed the 3-step carpet cleaning and sealing process. It seals in those toxic chemicals before they offgas into your home or baby crawls on them, sticking those chemical-coated hands into her mouth.

Step 1 - you steam clean your carpet with AFM Carpet Shampoo, sucking out some of the toxins.

Step 2 - has you work Carpet Seal down past the fibers into the backing - sealing in those poison glues.

Step 3 - you apply Lock Out to the top carpet fibers which also seals in offgassing chemicals as it protects your carpet.

These products are meant to be used together, though carpet shampoo may be used anytime to clean your carpets without the normal toxic shampoos. If your carpet is older, you may skip Step 2. We use these products in our house and find them a wonderful budget alternative to expensive wool carpeting.

Carpet Shampoo

Odorless, dye-free rug/carpet shampoo is non-toxic, non-corrosive, non-flammable and biodegradable. It will not irritate eyes or skin. It's a strong cleaner and odor remover, yet safe. Contains no harmful chemicals like ammonia, butyl ethers, alcohols, phosphates, caustics or acids. Can be used instead of toxic shampoos in steam cleaners.

SafeChoice Lock Out is designed to perform two functions:  first, to seal in the outgassing of harmful chemicals found in carpet fibers, and second to help repel dirt and stains.  I have also seen this product used to seal and protect new toxic furniture.

One quart covers 75 square feet.  One gallon covers 300 square feet.

Safecoat MexeSeal is a low odor, waterbased, clear sealer. It is suitable for use on porous interior tile or masonry surfaces where oil and water repellency are desired. It is ideal for long term protection against food, oil and water stains on residential or commercial floors. Safecoat MexeSeal is non-hazardous and non-flammable - a total replacement for high solvent content systems. Available in gloss and satin sheens.

USE ON - Safecoat MexeSeal is recommended on substrates such as unpolished marble, limestone, granite, sandstone, slate, fireclay (brick, tile, terra cotta, pavers), concrete (brick, tile, precast panels, cast in place). Always test in small, inconspicuous places before full application. Safecoat MexeSeal is generally not suited for polished surfaces. Not recommended for use on modern Saltillo or quarry tiles without special care. Saltillo or quarry tiles generally contain salts and other contaminants sensitive to application of water based products. White efflorescence flushing may occur. It may be necessary to repeatedly remove contamination and repeat MexeSeal application until all contaminants are extracted.

APPLICATION - To assist in quick drying/curing, bring adequate ventilation and air flow to the work area. Before using, stir Safecoat® Mexeseal thoroughly but without excessive agitation so as to avoid air bubbles. Then apply as is, using a squeegee brush, roller, sponge or appropriate spray equipment. Apply in thin coats. Allow at least two hours to dry between coats. For best results, this product should not be reduced. Two or more coats may be needed depending on porosity of masonry product. Apply only to a completely dry substrate. Correct application will often slightly deepen color of existing surface. Note: these instructions are intended to be general only and not exhaustive. The applicator should determine which preparation and techniques are best suited to the specific surface.

COVERAGE - One gallon of Safecoat MexeSeal covers approximately 300 square feet in one coat depending on surface porosity.

DRYING/CURING TIME - Under normal conditions, Safecoat MexeSeal dries to touch in one hour, is recoatable after two hours and may be opened to traffic after 8-24 hours, depending upon conditions. Normal conditions include a clean, dry surface, access to fresh air flow, a dust free environment, moderate humidity, and temperatures above 55 degrees F. Thick application, high humidity or conditions other than normal will cause Safecoat MexeSeal to dry and cure more slowly.

Safecoat Hard Seal is a multi-use, clear gloss sealer especially formulated to provide mar resistance to both low and high porosity surfaces. Because it forms a continuous membrane when applied properly it is particularly effective at sealing in any pollution or toxic chemical compounds outgassing from the surface to which it is applied.

USE ON - Typically used on previously uncoated and unsealed woodwork, cabinetry and vinyl tile. To prevent outgassing of previously coated surfaces, can also be applied over existing paints, stain and colorfast wallpaper. When applying to a previously coated surface test in inconspicuous places for satisfactory appearance. Not for use on particle board or chipboard.

APPLICATION - Always have adequate ventilation. Before using, mix coating thoroughly by gently stirring or rolling container to avoid air bubbles. Be sure to stir product thoroughly every 20 minutes during application. Do not shake container. Pour material to be used into another container before applying coating to avoid contaminating main container. Then apply as is, using a quality nylon brush, pad applicator, or unheated spray applicator. Apply liberal coats, keeping a good wet edge and avoid overbrushing. In most cases, a minimum of 2 coats is required, depending on the surface. When spraying, use a .015 tip or smaller. Apply thin even coats when spraying rather than heavy coats which will tend to sag. If spray pattern begins to dryspray, reduce air pressure and increase material flow to surface. Use a damp, dust free rag after sanding to remove dust particles. Use aluminum oxide or silicon carbide sandpaper to sand between coats. For best results, this product should not be reduced. Use only during low or moderate humidity conditions. Applying this product over lightly dampened surfaces can assist the user in controlling the dry time. Smoother finishes are achieved when surfaces are damp during application. For best results, this product should not be reduced.
